Feast, be merry and take in this Technical Talk - Safety System & Field Instrumentation - the evening of December 10. Don't forget to wear your ugly Christmas sweater!
Technical Talk Overview
We'll first look at these early safety life cycle considerations:
- Upcoming release of IEC 61511 Edition 3 (includes additional SLC phase for conceptual engineering)
- Opportunity for examining inherent safety and minimizing SIS scope (HIPPS example)
Then we explore the following as they related to field instrumentation considerations for safety systems:
- Overview of prime importance of field Instrumentation for safety performance
- Timing of field device specification
- Reliability & systematic capability
- Measurement types and diagnostics
- Final elements and diagnostics
- Interface/interaction with the SIS logic solver
- Reliability and the installation (minimizing spurious trips)
- Example of BPCS instrument measurement installation effect on SIS performance
Meet Our Speaker

Simon Lucchini
I&C SME, Cerilon
Simon Lucchini has over 40 years of experience in all phases of Safety Instrumented Systems design including hazard identification, system specification, design, verification & audit, operations and maintenance for a Petro-Chemical process end-user and design engineering in the oil & gas industry. He has worked in the process industry in roles ranging from operations/maintenance to corporate engineering and project engineering. A significant focus of his work has been the application of HAZOP and CHAZOP methodologies to control and SIS implementations.
Simon, now mostly retired, was the Fluor Global Fellow in safety systems design and the Chief Controls Specialist based at the Fluor's Calgary, Alberta office.
He has written papers on Safety Systems for various industry and academic venues. He has co-authored an ISA book, Safety Instrumented Systems - A Life-Cycle Approach, and written two chapters in Bela Liptak Instrument & Automation Engineer’s Handbook (5th Edition).
Simon has been recently in the working group updating the latest ANSI/ISA 5.1 standard and preparing the new ISA 5.1.04 P&ID TR.
